"A photographic portrait is a picture of someone who knows he is being photographed, and what he does with this knowledge is as much a part of the photograph as what he’s wearing or how he looks.” (Richard Avedon)
The portrait is one of the oldest and most honorable art forms. Until the invention of photography in the earlly 1800s, it had been a luxury for only the most wealthy families who could afford to hire a painter. Painters who couldn't afford models made portraits of themselves. Today, you don't need a painter to produce a self-portrait – just a mobile phone.
Why Sit for a Professional Portrait?
A portrait is a generous gift to yourself or your family. Unlike phone selfies, snapshots or school portraits, a personal professional portrait gives you the ability to command a private stage for a few hours, experiment with expression, clothing, and in the end create a high fidelity family or professional heirloom that can be printed at any size as well as well as shared online.
We create family portraits, portraits of babies and children, aspiring professionals and models, couples, seniors and expecting moms. It is the least technical and predictable photography we do, but also the most rewarding.
Two Cameras are Better Than One
As a husband-and-wife team, we shoot our portraits with two cameras, giving us many shots and angles on your action, some unsuspecting – and keeping you engaged.
Planning Your Portrait Experience
Portraits can be formal or candid, contemplative, playful, done with or without makeup, special dress and props. As Avedon said, you know you are being photographed: it's what you do with that knowledge that makes it a portrait.
Choose your own home, a public location, shoot in-studio with flash, or in our "outdoor studio" – our 7-acre ranch in Coeur D'Alene overlooking Beauty Bay (photos below). For families with children, the tall trees and grassy meadows are beautiful backgrounds and give children space to move and play.
